Oxidative Stress

Running on ROS: redefining metabolic adaptation and healthy aging.

Trends in endocrinology and metabolism: TEM

Abstract

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) is a master regulator of antioxidant signaling. Xirouchaki et al. show that NRF2 activation in skeletal muscle regulates metabolic homeostasis and healthy aging. Complementary evolutionary adaptations enhancing NRF2 signaling in horses underscore its role in muscle function and metabolism.

Key Findings

  • NRF2 is a master regulator of antioxidant signaling.
  • Activation of NRF2 in skeletal muscle regulates metabolic homeostasis and promotes healthy aging.
  • Evolutionary adaptations enhancing NRF2 signaling in horses highlight its role in muscle function and metabolism.

Clinical Significance

Understanding NRF2's role in muscle metabolism and aging could inform therapeutic strategies to enhance metabolic health and promote healthy aging through modulation of oxidative stress pathways.
